Planning a Photo Shoot in Ireland But Not Sure Where to Start?

Yeah, totally get that. You’re visiting a country you’ve probably never been to before — you’re not sure where to go, what’s worth it, or how to get there. And on top of all that, you want great photos out of it.

Most of the couples I photograph each year are in exactly that position. In fact, almost 90% of the couples I shoot each year visit Ireland from overseas — mainly from the US, Canada, Australia and Asia. They come knowing they want something memorable. They just need someone who can make it happen. That’s what I do.

You’re Not Just Hiring a Photographer. You’re Hiring a Local.

I’ve been photographing couples in Ireland for 16+ years. I know the locations that work — the hidden spots that don’t show up on Google, the best light at different times of year, and what to do when the Irish weather has other plans.

When you book with me, here’s what actually happens: we get on a Zoom call, we talk through what you’re imagining, and I help you figure out the best location for your time here and your schedule.

Have a look at my engagement portfolio. If you like what you see, let’s have a chat — no pressure, no hard sell. Just two people working out if we’re a good fit.

I’ve shot in sunshine, fog, Atlantic rain, and golden hours that disappear quickly. Whatever the day throws at us, I know what to do. Think of me as your photographer, location scout, and unofficial Irish guide — all in one.

“We’re Terrible in Front of a Camera.” Good…! So Are Most People.

Yeah, I hear this from most couples before we start. And I get it — being photographed feels incredibly awkward, especially if you’ve never done anything like this before. But here’s something worth knowing: the couples who say this at the beginning are usually the ones who send me the most enthusiastic messages when they see their photos.

The reason? I don’t shoot the way most people imagine. I work at a distance — often through foliage, across a field, or from around a corner. You’re not standing in front of a camera being told to “smile.” You’re just walking, talking, laughing together. I’m somewhere in the background, capturing what’s actually happening between you. Most couples forget I’m there within the first few minutes.

By the end, almost every couple tells me the same thing: it was nothing like they expected. No stiff poses. No awkward silences. Just the two of you, somewhere beautiful in Ireland, with photos that actually look like you — because that’s exactly what they are.

  • David Made The Entire Experience Feel Effortless

From the moment my fiancé surprised me with our engagement the night before, everything felt like a dream — and somehow David made it even more special. We took our engagement photos the very next day, and despite the whirlwind of emotions and excitement, David made the entire experience feel effortless, fun, and incredibly natural. My fiancé and I are definitely not people who usually take professional photos, and we were both a little nervous going into it. But David immediately made us feel comfortable and relaxed. He brought such an easygoing, fun energy that the session never felt awkward or forced. Instead, it honestly felt like we were just enjoying the moment together while he captured it perfectly. And the photos… absolutely beyond anything we could have imagined. Every single photo captured our personalities and the excitement of that moment so beautifully. Not only is David unbelievably talented, but he is also just an amazing person. Kind, professional, calming, fun — everything you would want in a photographer during such a special time in your life. If you are looking for someone who will make you feel comfortable, capture authentic moments, and deliver breathtaking photos, David is the photographer you want.

My fiance and I (from Columbus, Ohio) arranged to meet David on the West Coast of Ireland for a full day engagement shoot. David pre-planned our route (after talking with us over Skype months in advance of our trip), and took us to the most amazing locations! We loved spending the day with David, and appreciated him driving us around to all of our locations while we sat back and enjoyed experiencing the Wild Atlantic Way (something we wouldn’t have done otherwise). Neither of us were used to being photographed in a professional setting like this (and it was our first time being photographed together!), but David made it easy for us to relax and enjoy the whole experience. We can’t say enough how pleased we are with the photos (I currently have 5 hanging in my office, and a rotating selection of 10 or so for my computer wallpaper). We had such a wide variety of landscapes that many people asked us if we took our engagement photos over multiple days! Chris and I were shocked with how quickly we got our photos back from David–we were both so pleased with the quality of David’s work. It has truly been a pleasure for Chris and I (as well as our parents) to celebrate our engagement with such wonderful photos, and for us to share and to remember our Ireland trip together with such breathtaking landscapes! David was also wonderful in being accommodating to our MANY outfit changes! 🙂 Thank you so much David!

Add Professional Video Coverage to Your 90-Minute Shoot

For couples who want to relive the day in motion as well as in photos, the 90-minute session can include professional video coverage — a cinematic 90-second reel, shot by a professional videographer I work closely with on weddings.

Photo + Video package: €1,200.

Available on 90-minute sessions only in the Dublin & Wicklow area. Travel fees for other locations may apply.

Most couples don’t think about video until their wedding day — and then wish they’d had more of it. Adding video coverage to your engagement shoot gives you a cinematic 90-second reel you’ll actually use: on your wedding website, in a save-the-date, or just to relive the day whenever you want.

But there’s another reason it’s worth considering. Your engagement shoot is a low-stakes rehearsal for the wedding — and having both a photographer and videographer working together means you get to experience that dynamic before it matters. You’ll see how seamlessly it works, which takes one more thing off your mind on the day itself.

It’s also a chance to get comfortable in front of a camera and a lens at the same time — something most couples have never done before their wedding.

Best Locations for Engagement Photos in Dublin

Dublin Mountains

On the outskirts and to the south of Dublin city, the Dublin Mountains are easily accessible by car and provide a magnificent backdrop for any type of couple shoot. Lough Tay (otherwise known as Guinness Lake), is perfect for an engagement shoot or secret proposal.

A couple stands together on a grassy hillside with a lake and mountains in the background as the sun sets.

Killiney Hill – Dublin

FYI… My most popular location for an engagement shoot, proposal & couple shoots in Dublin is Killiney Hill which is just on the outskirts of the south side of the city. Easy access by car or train. 60 minute possible but best suited to a 60 or 90 minute shoot – €500/€600

Howth Head – Dublin

Howth Head is another very popular location for an engagement shoot and especially a secret proposal. Like Killiney Hill it is also on the outskirts of the city and is easily accessible. However, it is more exposed to the weather & offers less shelter than Killiney Hill. Best suited for a 30 or 60 minute shoot – €400/€500

Why I believe Wicklow is the best elopement or engagement photo location in Ireland

Here, I’m just going to talk about my favourite and in my opinion the best location in Ireland for an engagement shoot or elopement. It’s also my most popular location with visitors to Ireland – Wicklow. Otherwise known as ‘The Garden of Ireland‘ Wicklow is located just outside of Dublin. Continue reading.

I came across David’s blog when I was searching for a Photographer to shoot our engagement photos while we were on vacation in Ireland. His work took my breath away and I was so excited to work with him! David was very quick to respond and provided a lot of suggestions and ideas to help us plan a great photo shoot! He was very patient and encouraging while taking our photos. The outcome was amazing too! His photos are absolutely stunning! I could not have asked for better engagement photos! Everyone loves them! I cannot thank David enough for capturing our love in the most beautiful way!

Experience The Magic West Coast Of Ireland – €995+

If you’re drawn to the wild side of Ireland — the open bog, the Atlantic coastline, the kind of landscape that stops you mid-sentence — this is what you’re looking for.

West of Ireland shoots are completely bespoke. There’s no fixed route, no standard package, and no two sessions that look the same. Every shoot is planned around you: where you want to go, how long you want to spend there, what you want to come away with. Whether that’s a slow wander through Connemara National Park, a coastal cliffside somewhere along the Wild Atlantic Way, or a location you’ve had in mind since you first saw it in a photo — we build it around your trip.

These sessions are designed for couples who want to actually experience the west of Ireland, not just pass through it. Most run for three hours or more, because that’s what it takes to do it justice. We’re not rushing between spots — we’re letting the landscape do what it does.

Because every shoot is planned from scratch, pricing is bespoke too. Sessions start from €995, with the final cost depending on duration, location, and what’s involved in getting us there.

If this sounds like what you had in mind, get in touch and we’ll work out the details together.

  • Personalized Planning: We’ll coordinate the perfect timing to catch that legendary Irish light.
  • Versatile Locations: From the heights of Diamond Hill to the quiet shores of Pines Island, we can visit multiple sites depending on your timeframe and budget.
  • Expert Guidance: I’ll handle the logistics so you can focus on the moment (and each other).

Ready to make some memories in the wild West of Ireland? Reach out for further information and availability.

Cliffs of Moher Engagement Shoots

Since 2024, I no longer offer shoots at the Cliffs of Moher as they are no longer possible due to cliff path closures. For the details, please click here. Also, worth a read if you are just intending to travel there for a look.
