Engagement Shoots, Secret Proposals & Elopements in Ireland for American Couples

If you’re travelling from the U.S. and want to mark your trip with something truly special—whether that’s an engagement shoot, a secret proposal, or even an intimate elopement—Ireland offers one of the most unforgettable backdrops in the world. Rolling green hills, rugged coastlines, peaceful lakes, and centuries-old castles all combine to give you settings that feel straight out of a story.

Over the years, I’ve worked with many American couples who’ve flown in to either propose, celebrate their engagement, or say their vows here. And while the photos are always incredible, what makes it work is careful planning, choosing the right locations, and knowing how Ireland actually operates behind the scenes. This guide is designed to be your complete resource—so you know what to expect, how to prepare, and how to make the most of your time here.

Why Ireland Works So Well for U.S. Couples

  • Variety of landscapes in close proximity – Within an hour or so of Dublin you can move from peaceful lakes to dramatic mountains, castle grounds, and rugged cliffs. It’s rare to find so much variety in such a compact country.
  • Direct access – Dublin Airport connects directly to many U.S. cities, making Ireland one of the easiest European destinations to reach. For many Americans, it’s the first stepping stone into Europe—and one that instantly feels welcoming.
  • A shared history – America and Ireland have a unique bond. Millions of Americans have Irish heritage thanks to generations of emigration, and for many, visiting Ireland is more than just a holiday—it’s about reconnecting with roots. Even for those without Irish ancestry, Ireland has long been a bucket-list destination, known for its warmth, music, and storytelling culture.
  • Strong modern ties – Beyond family connections, the U.S. and Ireland are deeply linked economically, with many American businesses based here and also numerous Irish businesses operating in the US. This adds to the sense of familiarity for American visitors—coming to Ireland often feels like visiting an old friend.
  • Authentic experience – The Irish countryside, historic ruins, and timeless scenery give photos a look and feel you can’t find at home. Many couples tell me they chose Ireland because they didn’t want their engagement photos to look like “every other city park back home.”
  • Relaxed atmosphere – Ireland is well-travelled, but it’s not overcrowded. There are plenty of quiet corners where you can enjoy your shoot or proposal without feeling like you’re surrounded by tourists. It’s this combination of beauty and calm that makes it perfect for intimate moments.

Choosing the Right Season

Ireland is beautiful all year round, but each season has its own pros and cons:

  • Spring (March–May): Days are longer, blossoms and wildflowers appear, and temperatures are mild (50–60°F). Rain is always possible, but the countryside feels fresh and vibrant.
  • Summer (June–August): The most popular season. Expect long days (sunset as late as 10 p.m. in June), mild to warm temperatures (60–75°F), and golden evening light. Summer is busiest for tourism, so careful timing is key to avoid crowds.
  • Autumn (Sept–Nov): Rich colours, golden light, and cooler temperatures (50–60°F). Quieter locations and stunning sunsets make this one of my personal favourites.
  • Winter (Dec–Feb): Colder (40–50°F), but fewer tourists and more dramatic skies. Perfect if you want moody, atmospheric photos and a cosy pub after your shoot.

👉 Tip: Build flexibility into your schedule. In Ireland, a day can start rainy and end with spectacular sunshine. A two-day window gives us options to chase the best light.

What to Wear

Clothing can make a huge difference to your photos.

  • Comfort first. Many locations involve walking or light hiking, so wear shoes you can move in.
  • Think tones, not matching. Soft neutrals, blues, greens, and earth tones look incredible against Ireland’s natural backdrops.
  • Layer up. A stylish coat, wrap, or scarf looks great in photos and keeps you warm if the weather turns.
  • Avoid distractions. Bold logos, neon colours, or overly busy patterns can take the focus away from your connection.
  • Bring options. Some couples bring two outfits for extended shoot — a smart/casual look and something a little more formal—for variety.

Where to Go

Ireland is blessed with locations that suit every type of couple. Here are some of my most recommended spots:

  • Glendalough (Wicklow Mountains): Lakes, valleys, ancient ruins—timeless and full of atmosphere.
  • Lough Tay (Guinness Lake): A dramatic mountain lake, wild and remote yet only 45 minutes from Dublin.
  • Howth Head: Cliffside views, hidden corners, and sea air. Great for secret proposals.
  • Killiney Hill: Panoramic views over Dublin Bay and the Wicklow coastline. Easy access and stunning sunsets.
  • Malahide Castle: Historic castle grounds close to Dublin Airport—perfect for couples with limited travel time.
  • Connemara National Park: Incredible scenery in the West of Ireland.

Castles — Important to Know

Castles are iconic, but they come with rules:

  • No drop-ins. Generally you can’t simply walk onto castle grounds and start a shoot. Most require prior permission.
  • Guests only. Often, you’ll need to be staying at the castle hotel to arrange photography access. Eg – Ashford Castle
  • Outdoor access. Photography is normally limited to exterior grounds, unless special arrangements are made. Eg – Huntington Castle
  • Check the diary. If a wedding is happening, permission won’t be granted to avoid overlap.
  • Plan early. Some castles require formal photography applications, which can take 2–3 weeks. Eg – Malahide Castle

Popular choices for U.S. couples include Ashford Castle, Luttrellstown Castle, Dromoland Castle, Barberstown Castle, and Cabra Castle.

Travel & Accommodation

Travel

  • Car hire: The easiest way to explore, especially in Wicklow. Expect left-side driving and narrow, twisty roads. But it becomes very easy very quickly – like riding a bike..! Pro tip – rent a small automatic.
  • Distances from Dublin Airport: Malahide Castle (30 mins), Howth (40 mins), Lough Tay (1 hr), Glendalough (1 hr 15).
  • No car? Depending on locations and logistics, I may be able to collect you from your hotel and drop you off at the end of the shoot.

Accommodation

  • Dublin City: Luxury hotels like The Westbury, The Shelbourne, or The Merrion.
  • Wicklow: Powerscourt Hotel for luxury, or cosy Airbnbs near Glendalough.
  • Castles: Staying in places like Barberstown Castle, Clontarf Castle, Ashford Castle or Waterford Castle gives you both accommodation and photo opportunities.

Making a Day of It

Turn your shoot into part of a bigger Irish adventure:

  • Visit Powerscourt House & Gardens: One of the world’s top gardens, with sweeping views and romantic corners.
  • Do a cliff walk: Howth Head or Bray to Greystones are both breathtaking.
  • Pub or fine dining: Celebrate with a pint of Guinness in a cosy pub or book a special dinner.
  • Explore Dublin: Trinity College, Temple Bar, or the Guinness Storehouse.

Secret Proposals

A secret proposal takes extra planning, but the payoff is incredible.

  1. Plan together: We’ll choose the right location and moment.
  2. Logistics: I’ll guide you on how to set up the perfect “yes” moment. There is a lot in this but I make it very easy.
  3. Blend in: I’ll be in place, discreet and ready.
  4. The proposal: You get down on one knee, and I capture every detail.
  5. After-shoot: Once the surprise is out, we’ll do relaxed couple photos around the area.

Eloping to Ireland

For U.S. couples, elopements are becoming one of the most popular ways to get married abroad. Instead of managing 200 guests, an elopement in Ireland is about focusing on just the two of you—and creating an intimate, personal experience in an extraordinary place. And costing a fraction of the cost of a wedding in the US.

Why Elope Here?

  • Unforgettable settings: Say your vows on a cliff edge, in a medieval ruin, by a mountain lake, or even in castle grounds.
  • Less stress, more meaning: Without the big guest list, you can focus entirely on your connection.
  • Adventure + romance: Many couples combine their ceremony with travel—exploring Wicklow, Clare, Galway, or the Wild Atlantic Way.

What I Provide

Elopements are more extensive and detailed than an engagement shoot, which is why they start at €2,500. This covers the extra planning, customising, and time involved, including:

  • Full coverage so your story is complete—from preparations to vows to portraits.
  • Help choosing a location that reflects your personalities.
  • Recommendations for hair and makeup artists and florists.
  • Timeline planning to make sure your day flows naturally.

Many couples describe their Irish elopement as the best decision they ever made. It’s intimate, romantic, and free from the pressure of a big traditional wedding.

Pricing

  • Engagement & Proposal Shoots: From €350 (includes 50+ edited images delivered within 2 weeks). Additional cost depends on duration of shoot and location/travel expenses. See – Engagement & Proposals
  • Elopements: All elopements are priced individually as all are different. Prices start from €2,500 (full coverage, customised experience, and vendor recommendations).

Destination Elopements in Iceland, Italy, Spain & France

While many of my couples travel to Ireland for their engagement shoots, proposals, or elopements, my work doesn’t stop at the Irish border. I regularly photograph elopements and destination weddings across Europe—from the black sand beaches and glaciers of Iceland, to the sun-soaked coastlines of Spain and the dramatic peaks of the Dolomites in Italy. Iceland in particular offers easy access from both USA and Ireland.

However, each location offers its own unique atmosphere, and on my blog you’ll find stories from couples who chose these destinations for their once-in-a-lifetime experience.

For U.S. couples, combining a European adventure with an intimate elopement means you can capture not just your vows, but the spirit of your travels too.
