Love on the Dunes: A Secret Proposal Shoot at Bull Island, Dublin
There is something undeniably magical about Dublin just a week before Christmas. The city is buzzing, the lights are twinkling, and for J.P. and Saidhbhe, the air was thick with a very special kind of secret.
J.P., an American currently living and studying here in Dublin, reached out to me with a plan. His girlfriend, Saidhbhe, was flying home from Australia for the holidays, and he knew this was the moment. He wanted a secret proposal shoot at Bull Island, Dublin—a place that held a special meaning for them as a favorite spot for their long walks.
The Location: Why Bull Island?
If you’re looking for an iconic Dublin backdrop that isn’t a crowded city street, Bull Island (and Dollymount Strand) is unbeatable. You get those wide-open stretches of sand, the famous Poolbeg chimneys in the distance, and the dramatic wild grass of the dunes. It’s quintessentially Dublin, yet it feels worlds away from the hustle and bustle.
Pivoting with the Irish Weather
We had originally planned the shoot for sunset to catch that golden glow over the bay. However, as anyone who lives here knows, the Irish weather often has its own agenda!
With heavy rain clouds rolling in fast, we made a tactical, last-minute decision to bring the shoot forward by two hours. It was the right call. We traded the sunset for that incredible, soft winter light that photographers dream of—clean, crisp, and incredibly romantic.
The Big Moment
I’ll admit, I love the “stealth mode” part of my job. I waited in my car until I saw them pull up, then shadowed them from a distance as they walked toward our pre-defined proposal spot.
When J.P. gave me the signal, I moved in.
Seeing Saidhbhe’s reaction against the backdrop of the Dublin coastline was spectacular. We captured the “Yes,” the tears, and the sheer joy of the moment before heading into the dunes for a few stunning portraits to wrap up the session.
Thinking of Proposing in Ireland?
I find that many people tend to overthink a secret proposal. They worry about the logistics, the “hidden” element, or the timing. But honestly? Once you have a suitable location and a plan, they are remarkably straightforward and so rewarding to document.
Whether you are an American planning a destination proposal in Ireland or a local couple looking for an engagement shoot, I’d love to help you capture it.
Congratulations to J.P. and Saidhbhe—it was an honor to be part of your story!

Beyond the Beach: Other Iconic Dublin Proposal Locations
While Bull Island is a personal favorite for its rugged charm, Dublin is spoiled for choice when it comes to romantic backdrops. If you are planning your own secret proposal shoot in Dublin, here are a few other locations that offer distinct vibes for every type of couple.
1. St. Anne’s Park
Just a stone’s throw from Bull Island, St. Anne’s Park in Raheny is a dream for those who want a mix of nature and architecture. It is one of the largest parks in Dublin and offers incredible variety.
- The Vibe: Classic, elegant, and timeless.
- The Spot: The Walled Garden or the Rose Garden are stunning in the summer, but the Victorian-style Follies (like the Roman Temple) provide a dramatic, “Old World” feel all year round. It’s a perfect alternative if the wind on the beach is a bit too much on the day!
2. The Heart of the Fair City: Dublin City Centre
For the couple that loves the energy of the streets, a Dublin City Centre proposal is hard to beat. This is particularly popular for Americans visiting Ireland who want those “Postcard Dublin” photos.
- The Vibe: Vibrant, urban, and quintessentially Irish.
- The Spot: The Ha’penny Bridge is the classic choice, though it requires some clever timing to avoid the crowds. For something a bit more tucked away, the Creative Quarter or the cobblestone streets around Dublin Castle offer that historic atmosphere without the Temple Bar chaos.
3. Drama on the Edge: The Howth Cliffs
If you want a proposal that feels like it’s at the edge of the world, you have to head to Howth. The cliff path offers some of the most breathtaking coastal views in the country.
- The Vibe: Adventurous, wild, and awe-inspiring.
- The Spot: There are several viewing points along the Howth Head Cliff Walk that look out over Ireland’s Eye. It’s the perfect place for a “hike” that ends with a diamond. Just a heads-up: it can get breezy up there, so hold onto that ring tightly!
4. Exclusive Luxury: Howth Castle & Estate
For something truly private and exclusive, Howth Castle is the gold standard. While the cliffs are public, the castle grounds offer a level of intimacy that is hard to find elsewhere in the city.
- The Vibe: Grand, historic, and incredibly romantic.
- The Spot: Indoors in the castle or with the backdrop of the castle itself. This is an ideal choice for someone looking for a “fairytale” aesthetic. Since it’s a private estate where I can get you access to, I can guarantee that you won’t have any accidental “photobombers” in your big moment.
Choosing the Right Spot for Your Moment
When I work with clients—especially those traveling from the United States, Canada or Australia—I always ask about their “couple personality.”
- Are you outdoorsy? Go for Bull Island or the Howth Cliffs.
- Do you love history and architecture? St. Anne’s or Howth Castle.
- Are you foodies and culture lovers? Stick to the City Centre so you can walk straight into a celebratory dinner at a world-class restaurant.
No matter where you choose, the key to a successful secret proposal shoot in Ireland is communication. We’ll pick a suitable spot, a secret signal, and a backup plan for the weather.
