There’s a particular kind of wedding day that sticks with you — not because of any single dramatic moment, but because everyone in the room is genuinely, visibly enjoying themselves from start to finish. Amy and Eoghan’s wedding at Village Barn in Tyrellspass, County Westmeath, was exactly that kind of day.

When Amy first got in touch, she was clear about one thing: she wanted the day to feel relaxed. No stiff formality, no pressure, just a proper celebration with the people who mattered most. Having photographed loads of weddings at Village Barn over the years, as an experienced Village Barn wedding photographer, I knew straight away it was the right venue for that vision — and Amy and Eoghan’s day turned out to be one of the best examples yet of what this place does so well.

Getting Ready Just Down the Road

The morning started a few doors down from the venue itself, where Amy got ready with her bridesmaids. There was none of the usual rushing or nervous energy you sometimes get on wedding mornings — just an easy, laughing atmosphere that set the tone for everything that followed. It’s a small thing, but starting the day close to the venue meant no long car journeys, no clock-watching, and more time for everyone to actually enjoy the morning together.

A Ceremony in the On-Site Church

One of the things that makes Village Barn stand out from other Tyrellspass wedding venues is the small church right on the grounds. It’s an ideal spot for couples who want their ceremony close to the reception, without losing that sense of occasion a proper church setting brings. Amy and Eoghan married here, surrounded by close family and friends, and the setting gave the ceremony a warmth that matched the rest of the day perfectly.

Two Kids, and a Day That Reflected Them

Amy and Eoghan had been together almost fourteen years by the time they got married, and they have two children together. That history showed in how they approached the day — there wasn’t a hint of first-wedding-jitters formality about it. They knew exactly who they were as a couple, and they built a day around that: casual, warm, and centred on family rather than spectacle.

Their choice of venue reflected that too. Village Barn is a place that puts its energy into comfort and atmosphere rather than grandeur, and that’s precisely its appeal. It attracts couples who want a chilled, unpretentious day rather than a rigid, tightly-scheduled affair — and Amy and Eoghan are a perfect example of that kind of couple.

Speeches During Drinks, Not Dinner

One of the nicest touches of the day was their decision to have speeches during the drinks reception instead of holding them until dinner. It’s a trend I’ve noticed growing steadily over the last couple of years, and every time I photograph it, it works brilliantly. Guests are up, mingling, drink in hand, and the speeches become part of the flow of the party rather than an interruption to it. It also meant dinner itself stayed relaxed and conversational, exactly as Amy and Eoghan wanted.

A Day for the Guests, Not Just the Couple

Amy and Eoghan were refreshingly clear that they didn’t want to be the sole centre of attention — a slightly ironic goal for a wedding day, as they’d be the first to admit, but one they pulled off well. The focus was on everyone having a genuinely good time together. We got some lovely relaxed shots of their two kids running around, and no shortage of photos of guests and family simply enjoying themselves on the lawn — chatting, laughing, soaking up the summer sunshine.

That lawn, in particular, is one of Village Barn’s best features. It gives guests space to spread out, relax, and enjoy the grounds rather than being confined indoors, which suits exactly the kind of relaxed day Amy and Eoghan were after.

Into the Evening

I stayed through to the dancing, capturing the first few songs on the floor before saying my goodbyes and leaving the party to keep going without me. It was a brilliant way to close out one of my favourite days of the summer, at one of my favourite venues to work in.
